The tradition of engineering production in the Opava and Ostrava regions dates back to the second half of the 19th century. It was during this time that the first companies were founded, whose merger in 1948 led to the establishment of OSTROJ.
At the beginning of the 1870s, Arnold Elbertzhagen and Karl Glassner established an engineering company in Ostrava. Several years later, Eduard Tatzel founded Opavska strojirna a slevarna (Opava Engineering Works and Foundry).
In January 1948, the construction of a new plant on Tesinska Street in Opava was approved. On August 28, the foundation stone of the national enterprise Ostravska strojirna a slevarna (Ostrava Engineering Works and Foundry) was ceremonially laid. At the beginning of 1949, the OSTROJ trademark was registered for the first time.
OSTROJ was established as a center for the development and manufacture of machinery for underground coal mining. In 1977, it officially became part of the Ostravsko-karvinske doly (OKD) group.
On May 1, 1992, Ostroj Opava was established as a joint-stock company, which was subsequently privatized through voucher privatization in the following years. In 1999, the shareholder structure stabilized, with Vladimir Trochta acquiring a controlling stake.
On August 1, 2005, the company’s name was changed to OSTROJ a.s. During this period, new production halls were constructed, existing facilities renovated, and the administrative building modernized.
